Deschutes Black Butte Porter XXIII (Bend, Or.) Deschutes Brewery's 23rd Birthday Reserve!to celebrate, they released a limited batch of Black Butte XXIII, which is a doubled up, barrel-aged version of the brewery’s flagship ale, “It may seem a little unusual to release a dark, heavy beer in the middle of the summer, but to us, it was only fitting,” said Gary Fish, founder of Deschutes Brewery. “After all, the company has thrived for 20 years, largely on the back of Black Butte Porter.” Building on the existing chocolate notes already present in Black Butte Porter, brewers added Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle So where to next? What's 2011's rich, imperial take on Black Butte XXIII? Just for kicks, Orange zest perhaps? From Spanish Oranges. Seville, to be exact. And Chocolate nibs from the artisanal alchemists at Theo. Maybe some chilies? Pasilla Negra only, please. That would be crazy wouldn't it? Welcome to crazy. Get it while you can. This special Reserve Series release is a masterpiece and a tribute to the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. IBU 55 Alc. 11% |
Shmaltz Brewing Hop Manna I.P.A. (Saratoga Springs, NY) The beer is straw gold with a honeyquality to it that belies its crystal clarity. The nose is not as aggressive as the six hops may initially indicate. What you get is a really nice medley of soft aromas. There is citrus, naturally, but that grapefruit spray emerges slowly behind a powdery floral bouquet of paper white, lavender, as well as some pine sap that masks just a bit of bready malt. The mouth feel is excellent, the hops hit immediately – bitter citrus first, then the wafting, rosy florals, and finally just a slightly metallic touch at the end. The malt is not apparent immediately, but the lack of any sere, saliva-sapping aridity shows that there is more balance than you might think. 65 IBUs is a lot, but not a ton, and this beer is an easy-going 6.8% that’s going to please any hophead. It’s hop-forward, to be sure, but Schmaltz has done a wonder here by creating a ‘big’ beer that is not going to be undrinkable for those who don’t have a sense of humulus. Great stuff. Malt: 2-Row, Wheat, Munich, Vienna, CaraMunich 40. Hops: Warrior, Cascade, Citra, Amarillo, Crystal, Cenntenial. Dry Hopped: Cenntenial & Cascade! |

Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale (Chico) |
| Drake's Brewing 1500 Dry Hopped Pale Ale forward aromas with some grapefruity malty-sweet notes coming through. Medium-light body with hints of crystal malts but predominantly tasting of big, bitter hops. Deliciously drinkable Pale Ale that would have been considered an IPA just a few years ago. Silver Medal 2008 G.A.B.F. This brew varies, but each batch is increasingly delicious. Alc.5.5% 48 IBU. |
North Coast Scrimshaw Pilsner (Fort Bragg) Named for the delicate engravingspopularized by 19th century seafarers, Scrimshaw is a fresh tasting Pilsner brewed in the finest European tradition from Munich and Klages malts, Hallertauer and Tettnang hops. Scrimshaw has a subtle pale malt flavor a crisp, clean palate, and a dry finish. " Aromatic, spicy- hop nose. Finishes cleanly.... refreshing, with the hop profile being the main attraction". Alc.4.4% 22 IBU |

Malt and Hops are beautifullymarried in this full-bodied copper red Pale Pale Ale. A nose full of sweetness, hops and some fruit aromas. A smooth and creamy brew with a full chewy malt body that holds off the oncoming hop flavours for about a 1/2 second. A raw hop flavor in the beginning turns rind like, finally going drier at the end as it complements the lingering sweetness and mild fruity esters. Generously hopped for a long spicy finish. Alc: 5% 42 IBU. |
Stone Brewing Vertical Epic 11-11-11 (Escondido) The Stone 11.11.11 Vertical Epic Alepours a deep amber with a cream colored head of foam. The Belgian yeast strain used this year has more pronounced banana aromatics than the clove flavors produced by some of the yeast strains used in past years. Mixed in are toffee malt notes, hints of spice — clove and cinnamon — and a trace of very mild green chile in the back. The aromas all blend together incredibly well. Not your typical chile beer! The famous mild green chilies from the Hatch Valley in New Mexico add layers of delicious flavor with a very mild heat component. The base beer itself is very reminiscent of a European amber beer, hopped and brewed to a very Stone like 65 IBU and 9.4% ABV. Cinnamon is a wonderful spice if used judiciously, which we did here-it doesn’t by any means dominate the beer’s flavor, but definitely adds a subtly complex spice note that blends amazingly well with the banana esters and green chili. Malts: Pale, Crystal, Munich, CaraBohemian and Special B Hops: Warrior, Target, Perle and Pacific Jade. |
Anchor Steam (San Francisco) San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam®,
the classic of Americanbrewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing since 1896. Uniquely San Franciscan, Anchor has played a significant, though small, role in California's majestic history |
