Best Banjo Band http://www.bestofthebay.com/2003/e_ent.html

The best time to see the 15-plus-person Oakland All-star Banjo Band is during their Thursday-night jam session at Porky's Pizza Palace in San Leandro. The group of old-timers in matching green vests have been performing really old-school classics in the family-style pizza parlor for 20 years now, and the place is always packed solid with several generations of banjo, beer, and pizza enthusiasts. Musicians playing harmonica, bass, and washboard; various singers; and frequent guest instrumentalists from around the world join the crowd of banjoists for hits from the '20s and '30s, and when your mouth isn't full, you can sing along or join in the line dancing. Be prepared for heavy competition for floor space from the gaggles of children and flocks of swooning senior citizen groupies. Large groups should get there early. Thursdays, Porky's Pizza Palace, 1221 Manor Blvd., San Leandro. (510) 357-4323, www.porkyspizzapalace.com.
